Introduction to Special Services

The mission of Wesclin School District #3 is to provide an educational program that gives each student the opportunity to develop their fullest capacity in the areas of mental, physical, and emotional needs. Providing a high-quality educational program in a safe and positive learning environment is key. As special educators, we are committed to identifying students who meet specified criteria in order to provide services that allow them to develop with the appropriate instruction and supports pursuant to the standards established in the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA), Article 14 of the Illinois State Board of Education School Code, and the Wesclin Community Unit School District #3 Board of Education policies and procedures.

At Wesclin, a collaborative team is available in each school building as a resource to facilitate the identification, intervention, and evaluation of students undergoing difficulties in the classroom. Children experiencing behavioral or academic concerns may be brought to this team of professionals, which may include teachers, administrators, school psychologist, social worker, and school nurse, to brainstorm and implement research-based strategies and interventions to assist each student. If positive progress is not observed through data collection, students may then be referred for a special education evaluation to determine eligibility based on IDEA criteria. If a student requires special education support based on the comprehensive evaluation, an IEP is developed in collaboration with parents and educators discussing specific goals, accommodations, and instructional supports.  The plan is reviewed annually, and can be reviewed at any time per the request of the parent.

We continue to strive to provide the best possible services for our students at Wesclin by providing training for our staff, research-based curriculums and interventions, and incorporating best practices when providing instruction. We work towards helping our students achieve long-term goals through short-term objectives so that every student has access to free and appropriate education in order to develop to their fullest capacity in every area.
