Wesclin Math Team Wins First

On Monday, November 2, Wesclin’s Math Team placed first in the Southwest Math Competitions held at SWIC. It was the first time in seven years since Wesclin has placed first in this competition. There were four total competitions in which 25 students competed. In the final competition, the following students earned recognition: freshman Jenna Fleming (4th); juniors Katja Doebelin (8th) and Abby Becherer (3rd); Seniors Tom Krausz (8th), Jessica Conley (5th), and Maddie Henderson (3rd). In the team competition, Rachel Terwilliger, Kyra Daiber, Haley Middleton, and Maddie Henderson all worked together and finished 2nd. Senior Tom Krausz said, “It was awesome! There were seven or eight other schools there and we got first. It’s great.” Senior Nicole Fuhler said, “I’m happy we got first, because we haven’t received first in a long time.”
The team has had a successful year thus far. On Monday, September 21st at the SWIC competition, the top scorers by class from Wesclin are as follows: freshman Kelsey Bray finished second, sophomore Melanie Blanchard finished sixth, junior Katja Doeblin finished seventh, and senior Zach Stegman finished first. From the October 5th competition, the top scorers by class were freshman Owen Henderson who finished fourth, sophomore Ethan Boulanger finished fifth, junior Abby Becherer finished second, and senior Jessica Conley finished second. The top scorers by class for the October 19 SWIC competition are freshman Kelsey Bray who finished first, sophomore Collin Henderson finished seventh, juniors Katja Doeblin and Haley Middleton tied for sixth, and senior Zach Stegman finished first. In each competition, there is a special team competition made up of four students from each grade level and Wesclin’s team finished first at all the competitions in this category.
